Looks like a sand storm over Sahara...
I like the texture in the sky, which looks quite natural. I am not sure about the texture in/above ground - that one does look artificial. But I understand that this is not a realistic rendition of the reality. Overall, this image does work just like you wanted it to - gives impression of dryness and heat.
