Do you look at or through a photo?

No.

Hmmmm.... I was tempted to end my comments with that one word and be a smart a**. But, those mysterious dots make it impossible. They sit there like those candies you buy at the movies in the yellow boxes? Used to be called Mason Dots but I think someone else owns them now. Anyway, they have that gelatinous feeling, as if you'd sliced the bottoms off of a bunch and carefully placed the thin membranes atop this glimmering/glowing cityscape to make it clear that this was a cinematic moment. It's a wonderful composition, and a feeling-full instant.

I remember Dots! And enjoy your association of those with a "cinematic moment/instant" -- which is right on, I think. Not much conceptual depth, but it did strike me as potential "eye candy" in the view finder. Smiley

Thank you for your comments, Ted.

I don't know how to put it gently, April, but to be honest, this photo looks to me way too fabricated and almost naive. I hope you won't take this too seriously, though. I would hate to hurt your feelings...

Not at all, eob. Just trying to find my way, and appreciate your feedback.

I posted this image here, because I knew it would receive honest review.

I just came back to remove my post in hope you didn't get to it yet, but I see it's too late... I'm sorry, again, April. The problem with me is that I treat photography too seriously, even though I know I shouldn't.

Hi April

Sorry, but I think this is a bit too much.
When I see the picture I have to strain my eyes and feel like I am very drunk and stayed up all night to see the dawn.
... Well, obviously you transport a lot of thoughts with this image. Maybe I just changed my mind while writing this about the work ...

OK, to be honest, I like it a bit, but I can't tell you why ;-)
It looks very artificial, but I agree with Ted about the cinematic view.

Cheers,
André

Teehehee. No wonder this photo is received pretty controversial. It has, imo, a touch of a graphic drawing style. It feels like a good opening panel in a comic or better in a "bande dessinée". There's a mixture of realism and abstraction, about reality and dreams, about knowing and about imagination. This mixture is making it a bit more difficult than pure realism or abstraction, as the mind is constantly switching between the two worlds. However, it is this switching that keeps me awake, that doesn't let me go away so easy with a simple explanation. This shot is hard to put in a "prejudice drawer". And I like it for that very aspect. Can't say it's pretty or it's moving me emotionally, but I still like it for the very effect I tried to describe.

You see... this is what I really love about this forum. I am constantly invited to go well beyond liking or disliking. I try to understand and you all contribute valuable bits and pieces.

cheers

I just realized I haven't yet thanked you, Theo and Roland, for your recent comments. They are very much appreciated, because they make me think -- and in different directions.
