What to share with you first?

I decided to go with something cheerful.  First impressions and all.  Wink

I sense a provocation, Athena. Grin

Cheerful it is, without a doubt. Let's see what others have to say... Grin

I guess I should add that this is not a photoshop effect.  I always forget that people often see these and assume immediately that it is done with photoshop.  The only photoshopping here, aside from resizing and whatnot, is dust removal and a saturation boost.

Knowing your drop experiments, I see a rainbow colored umbrella, shown through a glass plate with drops on it... I fear this is a shot that needs some explanation. The colors are... well... rainbowy... Smiley ... smells much like artifical. The drops look like just another plugin effect. However, once knowing how the shot has been taken, it really shows the potential of this concept.

On first thought, I was reminded of a iTunes visualizer ... you know, those things that visualize music playing in iTunes. Smiley

Thanks for the cheerful eye-massage!

cheers

By explanation do you mean explain how such a shot is made without a photoshop plug in?  Seems perhaps the first impression I've made is one of photoshop fakery.  In all honestly, I'd be clueless how to do this WITH photoshop.

It is simply a colorful piece of paper behind a piece of glass with water droplets.  The droplets are refracting the light bouncing off the colorful paper, creating the explosive stellar shapes in front of the OOF background (that piece of paper).  All very simple really.  Shot with a macro lens and extension tubes.

No, not really. I meant explanation as in "the viewer better admires the shot when he is aware that this is not a photoshop quicky but a product of a creative mind and a fine technique".

It does come off as a a bit hard, or gimmicky. Which is a really a shame, because what that points up to me is how jaded I am in viewing! To realize this is the result of a unique way of seeing, instead of digital manipulation is...a 180.

And definitely where I'd prefer to go.

Hmmm ... it's funny that everyone thought it was a PS effect. My first thought was raindrops and I wondered how you cought them. The trick with the glassplate is a good one.

I definetely like the colours of this image. It is really cheerfull and it deserves the colours because it is abstract and the colours do not distract your view from structures. It looks like a fractal. A lot of times the same, but every time a bit different .... do you understand?

Oh yes, the idea of a mandelbrot set came to my mind too.  It took a while for me to notice how the background is realted to the structures in the drops. Once I saw that, I liked that quite good.
