Most strikingly, there is that sleeping face on the right side. Together with the overall cold atmosphere, this almost  beams me into a end scene of a movie, where the barn has lost the struggle and lied down in the winter, closing the eyes for a never ending sleep. The snow has already begun to cover the whole scene, another sign of "the end of the story".

Compositionally, I think the three points (eyes and nose) are the strongest aspects here. We are so bound to anthropomorphize... Another strong aspect are the multitiude of stacked lines. They form rhythms and the decent colors make the rhythms easier to see.

However, the relation of the line groups doesn't please me as much as I would ant them to. Smiley  So many angles, so few balances. Having the house cut on it's "back" isn't helping either and seeing the trees on the right side being cut too, I wish for a wider framing.

Still - once I saw the face, I had a much more favorable feeling towards the shot than I had at first glimps. Some shots need time to touch you... Smiley

The white-out of snow on the ground and the white sky plus the snow sticking to the barn create a wonderful winterly atmosphere. The old rugged barn with the sticking snow is a fascinating subject. Cutting off a bit of the barn on the left concentrates the image without dropping something relevant (maybe, you managed to remove something distracting in a very elegant way). With other words, I like this image. :-) Cutting off a bit more on the left and leaving a bit more space on the right, maybe while moving more towards a square format, may be promising. The sleeping face recognized by Roland came to my attention only after I have read his text - even though I usually tend to anthropomorphize.

Cheers

I agree with both comments. I'd like to add one more thing. To me, barn looks like it is floating in the air, instead of sitting on the ground. Perhaps a bit more texture in the snow would help to anchor the barn.

Oh yes, maybe even only cloning in a few of the specks from the right hand snow area would help. Imo, this is a good point, eob.

Very nice to have this shot for comparison. I mainly compared the composition, the effect of seeing the whole side, and I have to admit, I like the first, cut version better. That's beside the snow adding so much mood and interesting texture that lacks in the revised version...

The second shot is more a architecture documentation kind of photograph of this barn. I do like certain aspects, but overall, it is way less "spirited", less expressive to me.

Still catching up here after the holidays...

First view of the first image: "It's sleeping!"  Smiley

Initial thoughts: I very much enjoy the subtle hues and graphic play of line and texture on the barn. I'm a bit disappointed by the blocked-up trees, however.

Reading the comments...

I also agree that more definition in the snow would help anchor the barn.

Version 2 is much less engaging for me; perhaps because of the more static composition, and the overall darkness in the mood of the barn.

This is definitely a subject I'd visit over and over, because it has so much character.
