Do you look at or through a photo?

Your mastery of composition is triumphant in this image Ted. I like it also that you have come so far in discovering the secret of the effect I wondered about. This almost has it, perhaps without the drop shadows behind the balloons it is the secret recipe. However, those subtle shadows do add a bunch to the fantasy of this wonderful creation. Thanks... I really like this. You have developed an ability to use your many PP tools sparingly in ways that enhance the wonder of your images. Just as gifted painters use many brushes, each of them invisible to the visitor, you are increasingly discovering ways to bring whatever tool you need to whatever part of the image which will most benefit from it. Balloons is a grand example of craft in the employment of photo-based art image creation. Have you considered posting it at RedBubble? My guess is that it would sell for you. Um, but then again... who needs sales, right? Dirty the whole purity thing, right? :-)

First thank you for you comment. I've looked at redbubble but I'm just trying to sell them directly from my site.

Theo, I agree with Ted about 90% here. Smiley I love the way the sky opens up thanks to the composition. I think it's great to have the balloons just appearing on the lower frame border. That really gives the whole scene a great upwards motion tendency. I like the specular light on the main balloon. I am however, not really happy with the two lower edges... and I'm not sure I like the drop shadow behind the "gondola". I'd prefer to have that part (and only that part) at least slightly faded.

cheers

So delightfully playful and whimsical! (Yet also graphically strong; the upward spiral of the main balloon is brilliant.)

I also love the peeks of balloons along the lower edge; I keep viewing the image somewhat like a movie -- expecting them to rise into the frame. Smiley

I do agree with Roland about the harsh edges on the main gondola; that area takes my mind toward noticing technique, instead of my sheer enjoyment of this image.
