Just as with "The demise of the kingdom", there isn't really very much postprocessing in this shot, but it is that postprocessing that makes the difference...

Inversion? Resulting in a "figure/ground flip."

Then it's hard to label which parts of the subject are encroaching on which, challenging a common perception.

When I squint my eyes, I see an aerial shot of a glacier and a rock, or, a lava field. I like the tension between the crispness (almost harshness) of bubbles and the smoothness of that gray matter, whatever that is...
