I am a bit on a tight schedule, but this one, I wanted to share with you...

I've had this tunnel construction site near my home for almost two years now. And you might remember a good deal of shots I took on that construction site. Some really quite nice scenes there... First I hoped to convince the city officials to let me exhibit some of those shots during the grand opening ceremony of the tunnel. But that didn't seem very real... too expensive for me, for just one day exhibition. And no money coming from the officals (very complicated to get some sponsoring from that side).

So, I decided to go the book road... and I will produce a book from those collection of construction site photographs. And I will try to find some sponsors for that project.

But, I also managed to convince some folks to let me use my nice and strong beamer to show a slide show in the middle of the tunnel - projecting my shots directly on the tunnel wall. And I can hang a selection of prints in the emergency tunnel exit - where a few hundred officials will pass by during the tunnel opening ceremony. Later that day, the tunnel is opened for the public viewing - so my slides and the prints in the tunnel will get even more exposure.

I am quite excited about that. I think it will be fun to use a tunnel wall to show my photographs about the construction site.
Smiley

I'll report back with some snapshots from that event.

cheers

Exciting indeed; congratulations!

What an interesting venue. I wish you much positive feedback from the event, and am looking forward to your "snapshots".

Ok... change of plans... but we artists are quite flexibel, aren't we? Smiley  They won't walk through the emergency exit... they won't walk through the tunnel at all, as it takes too long for 400+ persons to pass - at least according to the schedule they have for the official ceremony...

But. That isn't actually a bad thing. They won't have seen the tunnel at all from the inside, and so there is a good chance they will walk back the 600m and pass my slide show then. And still, all the public will certainly see the slides too.

I now have produced six shots with explanatory and hopefully motivating text fragments and ordered them as prints in 50x70cm (20x28"). I will now hang this sequence of 6 big prints at each entrance of the tunnel so they are aware of the slide show in the middle. Now I am working on the slide show itself...

So, the happening is over and it was exhausting. And I think this is good... i mean in terms of "it wasn't boring". There were surely well over 2000 people visiting the tunnel, passing by my slide show. I had approx. 200 people sitting down and watching the slideshow from start to the end, all the 20 minutes. I consider this being a great success. I had a lot of personal, direct feedback and about 25 written feedbacks in the booklet.

The book project has gained many interested people so I think I'll be able to go for a nice (yet still small) edition and sell them for a decent price. I'm now working on the virtual exhibition and I provide you guys with the slideshow in movie format. Sorry, but it's german only... but you might get the idea  . Imagine this being projected onto the tunnel wall, approx 8 x 5 meters  (24 x 15 ft). The tunnelwall was painted in a silky, pretty smooth bright grey so the colors and the brightness was really very nice. The atmosphere was exceptional... seeing those shots in the tunnel and habon so many people passing by, very many of them coming ot a halt for a few minutes, and the said 200 people sitting down and staying with me for the whole slideshow.

Press was there, and I got interviewed, but I am quite sure I won't make it into the printed edition... too many officials there, all longing to be interviewed about their personal oppinion. Smiley

Here's the link (90MB, quicktime):

Please don't share that outside this closed group, 'cause I have mixed it with sound. And I don't yet have the license from the publisher (but I have applied for it). I was asked to produce a DVD and this is why I want to get the sound licensed.

A wonderful blend of documentary and artistic in the video presentation! I love experiencing how you saw the details, and also enjoy an opportunity to listen to the music of Philip Glass again. Smiley

Not being able to read German, I was glad the words didn't interfere with my impressions of the images. Still, I would like to see an English version.

One question I had about the virtual exhibition was how you determined sequencing... Watching the video version, however, I have the   impression they are grouped by energy.

Amazing, Roland; so very moving. I'm not surprised your slideshow engaged that many people for an entire sitting!

Thanks, April. I'll think about a english version, but not before I get a quote from the music righs holder about the price tag to use the three pieces of music in such a movie production. I plan to produce a DVD - that was requestes/wished for during the exhibition.

As for the determination of the sequence... this way purely a guts feeling driven thing. Well, ok, there were some thoughts too. Smiley I planned the start of the slideshow with the more common, less artistic shots (so people won't jump the negative thoughts wave about artists and their unrecoginzable work...) and I wanted a warm, intense shot at the end.

The rest was more a shuffling during the process, trying to get a decent color sequence, trying to have those "comparison shots" (those who show what "really" is shown) nicely separated or distributed in the whole movie.

The slideshow was done with Apple Keynote and then exported. It worked very nicely.

That strikes me as so perfectly sensitive to your audience, and delightfully skillful as the means to draw them in to discover more.

Fine. So, the project evolved and there is now a photo book available. I've compiled the shots into a book of 110 pages. YOu get an idea of the book if you visit the preview pages:
